The Review 2019 – A Year of Challenge and Change

The end of the decade saw a turbulent year, with dramatic weather events driving a global change in our approach as designers and manufacturers to our work, and its direct and indirect effect on the environment.

It was a year which finished with devastating fires that have been sweeping through Australia’s Eastern regions, destroying communities, biomes and native wildlife. apaiser also experienced a challenging year personally after a major incident in one of our manufacturing facilities. It was a year of hard work and dedication from our team with our focus on recovery and rebuilding. We are very grateful to our clients and partners for their patience and support as we navigated our way through the difficulties and slowly got back on track. It was not all doom and gloom however.

Despite the challenges, we continued to deliver some stunning projects in Australia, Asia, USA and the UAE. We invite you on a journey to some of our favourite projects from 2019 to celebrate the end of the decade.

A truly inspiring and fabulous showcase!

New York City, United States of America

One of Ian Schrager’s latest developments is located on what is probably the most famous intersection in the world. Edition Times Square in New York is a cutting-edge hotel which epitomises modern luxury and urban energy. Apaiser worked closely with Yabu Pushelberg to create bespoke baths in a finish unique to the project. To complete the bathroom concept, Made to Measure integrated basins were crafted to fulfill the desire for truly personalised bathing luxury.

Melbourne, Australia

A residence and a gallery, this expansive 500 square metre urban warehouse nestled in a Melbourne inner city suburb, was created by Oliver du Puy Architects. The space has been designed to accentuate high ceilings, exposed beams and large loft style windows. Décor is restrained and sculptural – robust materials such as steel and concrete are softened by oak wood floors, creating a semi-industrial background for the contemporary art collection showcased throughout. apaiser’s Chi Basin is featured in the bathroom. Barcelona, Spain

Opened few months ago, the luxurious Nobu Hotel in Barcelona fuses Spanish character with Japanese craft and design influences. Generous, light filled suites were fitted with the highest quality organic and natural materials – the result is mesmerising. Travertine and wooden paneling in the bathrooms reminisce of Japanese onsens with tailored and architectural flair. A pair of apaiser Lotus basins adorn the timber vanity adding an organic element to the composition of the space. The Nobu harnesses the vibrancy of Barcelona, while also providing a tranquil urban respite.

Filled with Australian coastal references, the boutique accommodation house is the pinnacle of luxury for the those who seek true relaxation combined with comfort and convenience. A colour palette of bush greens, rust, sandstone, sea foam, warm greys and sandy whites, can be seen throughout the generous rooms. Elements of the surrounding landscape, and natural, textural materiality give the house a quintessential Byron Bay holiday vibe. Wet areas play an important role in the homes design and functionality.

There are five bathrooms, all featuring apaiser pieces in a variety of organic shapes and finishes. Each bathroom has a distinct personality – the careful selection of apaiser pieces beautifully complement the palette and continue the design narrative.

Sentosa Island, Singapore

Debuting in December last year, our latest hospitality project in Singapore – The Barracks Hotel on the Sentosa Island, is a tribute to the city’s colonial past. Once a British military outpost, the building from 1904 is now a boutique 40-room hotel, created by KKS Group. Featuring a colonial façade overlooking the pool and abundance of tropical foliage, the hotel is a great example of heritage restored and celebrated through considered design. All hotel bathrooms have been fitted with bespoke apaiser freestanding baths and Eclipse basins in a rich hue developed for the project.

Melbourne, Australia

Designed by Biasol, Casa Chiaroscuro in Melbourne, is a celebration of balance and contrast. As per the design brief for the residence to be ‘monochrome, textured, dramatic”, the residence explores the power of the colour black and the interplay of light and shadow. Inspired by the ‘chiaroscuro’ technique in the visual arts, a wonderful sense of drama and artistic composition was achieved in the space.

Left: Careful restraint is exercised in the colour palette of the secondary bathroom, with moody apaiser pieces and dark tapware being the focal points of the space. Beautiful.

Bottom: The apaiser Haven Bath and Scoop Vanity have been selected for the master ensuite. With textured terrazzo tiles and lots of dispersed light, the space emanates an array of shapes and colours, despite being monochromatic.
