Heritage restored – The Barracks Hotel in Singapore

A second home for apaiser and therefore a frequent travel destination, Singapore is one of our favourite places in the world.

A cultural melting pot, the Singapore city boasts a stunning array of architectural styles, buildings of historical significance and outstanding hotels designed by incredible, innovative, forward thinking local practices. It is a hub for some of the regions most talented designers.

Opened in December last year, our latest hospitality project in Singapore – The Barracks Hotel on Sentosa Island, is a beautifully crafted tribute to the Islands maritime past. Formerly a British military outpost, the building, constructed in 1904, has been transformed into a 40-room boutique hotel by KKS Group’s Singapore team.

“The Barracks Hotel was a challenging project because we had to fuse KKS design style with the existing colonial building…It was key to correctly represent this hotel and we did not want to over indulge the rich history of The Barracks by adding contemporary design elements. Instead we balanced and merged elements from past and present.”,  say Iwata-san and Hidemi-san at KKS International.

The result is a storied sense of style, intrigue and romance – a wonderful example of heritage restored and celebrated through considered design.

The carefully preserved building overlooks a stunning pool and abundance of tropical foliage.

Inside, decorative mouldings, original columns and louvered windows create the perfect backdrop for more contemporary comforts and artifacts from its fascinating past.

“The guestrooms epitomise luxury and comfort thanks to the addition of warm lighting. Cove lighting was used to accentuate elegant textures and finishes on the wall. In order to keep the colonial design influences consistent in the hotel, British Champagne style furniture were selected to compliment other finishes in the lobby and the suites, and a matching colour palette and mood scheme were used throughout. “ say Iwata-san and Hidemi-san.

The apaiser team created luxurious, bespoke freestanding baths for the bathrooms, paired with Eclipse basins from the collections in a rich, deep custom hue.

…Most of the fixtures are in dark timber finish to give the interior a more rustic touch, including the sanitary pieces. The white paint and marble stone were selected to brighten up the space, creating a harmony of past and present – add Iwata-san and Hidemi-san.
